CELEBRATING MY WAY THROUGH

A minor departure from garden updates, restaurant reviews, and the usual foodie events today.

What does a food writer do to celebrate the turning of a new decade in her life? She eats her favorite foods. In addition to wining and dining my way through this week, the only request to help me over the decade hump was a happy return to great, live music.

Yeah, that’s Ringo Starr, who also happens to be celebrating his birthday today. This was a fantastic concert at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, NJ, and a perfect way to start the celebration.

PULLING JEWELS FROM THE EARTH: BEETS

Some of the most beautiful things in the world start out covered in mud and soil. You have to get your hands dirty to get to the best bits, but it is worth it. 061514 farmers market beetsIf you aren’t growing beets in your garden this year, no worries, that’s what the farmers markets are there for. 062214 golden beets

Look past the dustiness and the huge green leaves. Don’t throw the leaves out though, they are full of vitamins and delicious to saute in oil with garlic.

PEAS: SNOW, ENGLISH OR SUGAR SNAP

So far, this season is turning out to be quite pea pleasing. We grew three varieties and they all came up gangbusters. 061714 peas   One of the favored side dishes from our kitchen is a saute of sugar snap peas, cherry tomatoes, and basil. Lots of sweet veggie crunch to a dish like this and it leaves you with the taste of summer in your mouth.
